Promoted Birmingham City receive open top bus parade snub as double awaits
Blues have clinched promotion to the Championship and could now go on to win a league and cup double
Troy Deeney is celebrating Birmingham City’s promotion, but insists: “I hope there isn't an open top bus.”
Blues sealed promotion back to the Championship with a 2-1 victory over Peterborough United on Tuesday night - and their season could get even better as they are favourites to go on and win the League One title and complete a double by winning the Vertu Trophy at Wembley against Posh this Sunday (3pm).
Former Blues captain Deeney, a self-confessed fan of the club, says manager Chris Davies and director of football Craig Gardner deserve huge credit for a brilliant season at St Andrew’s @ Knighthead Park, but he does not think promotion celebrations should be over the top with an open top bus parade.
Speaking on talkSPORT on Wednesday, Deeney said: “It’s great. Obviously, it has been about alignment, isn't it?
"I was thinking, how big do you go on this? We actually don't go that big.
"We should win. We should be out of League One. We should win on Sunday.
"It's about how do we do the next step in the Championship because now there's expectation to get promoted straightaway.
“So I feel that we're in a good place. The manager deserves so much credit and so does Craig Gardner.
“For the last 10 to 15 years this place has been a mess. But they (the owners) have got money, they've sorted the stadium out, we've got the players to get us up. Now can we go and recruit and do it again properly.
“Yes we should be promoted and well done to everybody, but I hope there isn't an open top bus.”
