Five Doncaster Rovers players who are out of contact in June

In these unprecedented times, no one knows what is happening with football. It’s on an enforced hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic and there’s no real sign of when this will be lifted. There’ll be a logistical backlog of games to get through. Aside from that, there is also the need to consider player contract situations – the projected end date for the season being past the traditional 30 June cut-off point for contracts.

With either 11 games left in League One for Doncaster Rovers, the South Yorkshire side find themselves a short stretch away from the playoff picture. As it stands, Donny are five points plus goal difference behind Peterborough who occupy the last of the League One playoff slots. It’s uncertain times in football and one uncertainty centres around contracts and what will happen going forward. Here are five Doncaster Rovers players who are out of contract at the end of June.

Alex Baptiste (centre-back): 34-year-old defender Batiste signed for Doncaster from QPR on a free transfer ahead of this season. The much-travelled central defender, who started his career at Mansfield, brought with him a wealth of experience to the Keepmoat Stadium. However, he’s not been used this season aside from two appearances in the first two games of the season against Gillingham and Rochdale. After that he didn’t ake a matchday squad again until late-February, appearing on the bench for the last three games before football was closed down.

Devante Cole (centre-forward): 24-year-old Cole, son of Manchester United great Andy Cole, singed for Darren Moore’s Doncaster side from Wigan Athletic at the back end of January this year. He’d scored four goals and laid on one assist in a loan spell away from the Latics with SPL side Motherwell. Since being snapped up by Doncaster on a six-month deal, with the option of a further year, Cole has played in nine games for the South Yorkshire side but is yet to find the back of the net.

James Coppinger (right midfield): Evergreen 39-year-old midfielder Coppinger signed a new, one-year contract in September as he entered his 16th season as a Doncaster player. Since signing for the South Yorkshire side in July 2004, Coppinger has gone on to make 637 appearances for them, scoring 72 goals and providing 109 assists. This season he’s shown his worth for the League One side with three goals and eight assists in 29 appearances.

Alex Kiwomya (right-winger): Former Chelsea youth player Kiwomya joined Doncaster Rovers in a free transfer from the Blues Under-23s at the start of July 2017. Since signing on at the Keepmoat, he’s gone on to make just 20 appearances in which he’s scored one goal and added two assists. He’s featured once in the league this season in a six-minute substitute appearance against Ipswich Town in mid-September and hasn’t made the matchday squad since mid-October.

Kieran Sadlier (left-winger): 25-year-old Sadlier joined Rovers at the start of January 2019, singing on the dotted line from Irish side Cork City on a free transfer. He’d started his journey in football at West Ham before free transfers to St Mirren and Peterborough United. Since arriving at the Keepmoat, Sadlier has gone on to make 59 appearances for Donny, scoring 15 goals and providing six assists. This season has seen the much-rated winger feature in 33 of Darren Moore’s line-ups where he has repaid his manager’s faith with 11 goals and six assists.
