Leeds join race for Newcastle striker Dwight Gayle

Leeds United are reportedly planning to make a bid for Newcastle striker Dwight Gayle amid transfer interest from a host of other Sky Bet Championship sides.

Gayle’s former club West Bromwich Albion, Nottingham Forest and Stoke City have all been linked with the 30-year-old and now according to Football Insider, Leeds also want to lure him away from St James’ Park.

It is thought the Whites are readying a bid in case Arsenal decide to recall Eddie Nketiah who has scored five goals in 13 appearances for Leeds this season.

Magpies boss Steve Bruce has already said he would be willing to sell Gayle for the right price in January with the club reportedly set to command a fee of at least £15m.

London-born Gayle was part of Arsenal’s youth set up and made his first senior appearance for Dagenham and Redbridge back in 2011.

His stock rose after a short but impressive stint at Peterborough United and he soon established himself as a Premier League player by joining Crystal Palace.

After three years at Selhurst Park, he joined newly-relegated Newcastle in 2016 and helped them secure an immediate return to the top flight in the 2016/17 season.

However, he fell out of favour at St James’ Park last season, prompting a loan spell at West Bromwich Albion which saw him score 23 times in 39 appearances for the Baggies.
