Jon Mellish scored a hat-trick as rock-bottom Carlisle stunned promotion-chasing Peterborough with a shock success in League One.

Midfielder Mellish, who had only previously scored twice all season, did the damage as Paul Simpson's basement boys bagged just a sixth win of a torrid campaign.

Mellish rose unchallenged to meet substitute Jordan Gibson's cross after Posh switched off from a Dylan McGeouch short corner as Carlisle took a 27th minute lead.

The same man doubled their advantage three minutes into the second half when he struck an impressive volley past Posh goalkeeper Jed Steer, following a weak defensive header from England Under-20 defender Ronnie Edwards.

Mellish was not done there, completing a memorable treble in the 58th minute with another spectacular left-footed volley after the hosts failed to deal with a McGeouch cross.

Posh quickly hit back as captain Harrison Burrows slammed a 61st-minute shot through a crowd of players from the edge of the box but that was as good as it got as Darren Ferguson's men flopped.

Substitute Jonson Clarke-Harris fluffed a glorious chance to cut the arrears further, before also being denied by the bar late on as the Cumbrians stood firm.

Safe journey back home guys. As a posh fan, you certainly didn't play like a bottom league club. Possibly too little to late but take nothing away, take chances you win games, and definitely not the worst team to come to London road this season. All the best of your journey back to league 1.

A somewhat surprising result, to say the least. That probably knocked any chance Posh had of automatic promotion as Derby found a way to win again. Pompey almost there and Derby look odds on as well. Lincoln look a threat to grab the third spot. Well done to the Cumbrians, by the way.

Ending the season with something to be optimistic about Carlisle.

Super showing from Carlisle. They didn't capitulate when Posh got their goal, so really pleasing. Starting to score now, this bodes well for life in league 2. A few little positive moments in a dire season.

Funny old game Football! Where did that performance come from? The Blues have improved massively in the past month, but it’s too late to avoid the drop. Hopefully if the Squad stays together, we may compete back in League 2 next Season. The sooner this one is over, the better!

Start without a recognised striker and it comes back to bite. Yes I know Clark-Harris will leave at the end of the season but a double golden boot winner left out of the starting line-up again and again is baffling. Well done Carlisle and the fans who made the long trip. Dreaded play-offs at best for the Posh.

I find it interesting that the allegedly best forward line in the division have only mustered 3 shots on target in their last two home games
